NTPC Launches Hydrogen-Powered Buses in Leh, Setting Global Record
Key Ideas
  • NTPC, in collaboration with SIDCO, has introduced five hydrogen fuel cell buses in Leh, India, marking the country's first commercial deployment of such buses.
  • The hydrogen buses will operate at Leh's high altitude, setting a global record for green mobility and showcasing India's commitment to sustainable transportation.
  • The project includes a hydrogen fuelling station powered by a solar plant, aiming to significantly reduce carbon emissions by 350 metric tonnes annually and generate 230 metric tonnes of oxygen.
  • With this initiative, NTPC reinforces its goal to expand renewable energy capacity, with plans to achieve 60 GW by 2032, contributing to India's sustainable energy transition.
National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has introduced five hydrogen fuel cell buses in Leh, India, in partnership with SIDCO, a Ladakh administration undertaking. This deployment marks India's first commercial operation of hydrogen-powered buses. The buses will run at high altitudes in Leh, setting a global record for green mobility. NTPC had previously launched the world's first hydrogen fuelling station for green hydrogen mobility in Leh in November 2023. The station, situated at an altitude of 11,562 feet, is powered by a 1.7 MW solar plant. The project is expected to have a significant environmental impact, reducing carbon emissions by 350 metric tonnes annually and producing 230 metric tonnes of oxygen, equivalent to the oxygen generation of 13,000 trees. NTPC, as India's largest power utility, with over 81 GW of installed capacity and 29.5 GW under construction, including renewable energy projects, aims to expand its renewable capacity to 60 GW by 2032. This initiative aligns with India's goals for sustainable energy development and showcases a commitment to green transportation.
