OMV Unveils Flagship ReOil and Green Hydrogen Facilities in Vienna
Key Ideas
- OMV inaugurated a ReOil chemical recycling plant and a 10 MW electrolyzer facility for green hydrogen production in Vienna, Austria.
- The facilities are part of OMV's Strategy 2030 to become a sustainable chemicals, fuels, and energy company, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.
- OMV plans to invest in a new 140 MW green hydrogen plant in Lower Austria, with an annual production capacity of up to 23,000 tons to reduce CO₂ emissions significantly.
- The company aims to utilize renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro power for green hydrogen production, aligning with EU legislation on renewable fuels.
OMV recently unveiled its flagship ReOil chemical recycling plant and a 10 MW electrolyzer facility for green hydrogen production at the Schwechat refinery near Vienna. The ReOil plant focuses on converting hard-to-recycle plastics into high-quality products, contributing to circularity and environmental sustainability. The 10 MW electrolyzer facility, the largest of its kind in Austria, has the capacity to produce up to 1,500 tons of green hydrogen annually.
Alfred Stern, Chairman and CEO of OMV, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 through innovative technologies. The event "From Innovation to Impact: Forward for Good" highlighted the importance of collaboration for a sustainable future.
In addition to the Vienna facilities, OMV announced plans to invest in a 140 MW green hydrogen plant in Lower Austria. This new plant, subject to auction outcomes, aims to produce 23,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. Martijn van Koten, OMV Executive Vice President, expressed how this investment signifies a shift towards sustainable production of fuels and chemicals.
The upcoming electrolysis plant in Bruck an der Leitha is set to commence operations by the end of 2027, utilizing renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. This project builds on OMV's experience from the 10 MW electrolyzer facility, which was a pioneer in green hydrogen production certified under EU legislation. By pioneering green technology and investing in renewable energy, OMV is leading the way in industrial transformation towards a more sustainable future.
