Toyota Kirloskar Motor in India is embarking on a project with Ohmium to explore hydrogen-based microgrids for clean energy solutions. The pilot system utilizes Toyota's fuel cell technology and Ohmium's electrolysers to generate green hydrogen from water and air, subsequently converting it into electricity. The main objective is to provide reliable, off-grid power for critical sectors such as manufacturing and data centers. Vikram Gulati of TKM emphasized the importance of fostering innovation with local partners and tailoring energy solutions to Indian conditions. The project is seen as a strategic move towards achieving India's energy self-reliance and decarbonisation targets by 2047. Sudeep Dalvi highlighted hydrogen's significance as a clean energy carrier and its potential in both stationary and transport applications. While the focus is currently on testing and optimizing the system, there are plans to localize key components if the project proves economically feasible. The integration of Ohmium's electrolysers with Toyota's fuel cells presents technical challenges and opportunities, aiming to create an indigenous hydrogen energy solution. This initiative builds on Toyota's existing hydrogen endeavors in India, including projects with hydrogen vehicles and collaborations on refueling infrastructure.
