A new international research initiative has been launched to measure hydrogen emissions from operating infrastructure in North America and Europe, where empirical data is currently lacking. This initiative aims to support the expansion of commercial hydrogen operations by providing crucial information to stakeholders like producers, regulators, and investors. The study, led by industry giants like Air Products, Air Liquide, Shell, and TotalEnergies, along with academic institutions and research firms, focuses on quantifying hydrogen emissions from various facilities in the hydrogen value chain. Using advanced technology and high-precision hydrogen analyzers, researchers aim to detect and characterize emissions accurately and efficiently. The study addresses the emissions challenges associated with hydrogen deployment, which can indirectly contribute to warming if not managed effectively. By providing rigorous scientific evidence, the initiative seeks to fill the gaps in understanding hydrogen emissions and inform sound policies and practices. The study, which began in March 2021 and is funded by philanthropic contributions to the Environmental Defense Fund, will continue until early 2026. Data collected will be aggregated, anonymized, published, and made publicly available to support transparency in the sector and guide future investments in hydrogen technologies.
