India's Green Hydrogen Vision: Leading the World in Renewable Energy Innovation
Key Ideas
  • India showcased its renewable energy achievements, with over 223 GW capacity, positioning it as a key player in the global market.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, creating jobs and attracting investments.
  • Recent developments include significant allocations for green hydrogen production and pilot projects in key sectors.
  • Challenges such as high production costs and infrastructure limitations exist, but India is actively addressing them to scale the hydrogen economy.
Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi highlighted India's ambition at the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, emphasizing the country's goal to lead in renewable energy and green hydrogen. With over 223 GW of installed capacity, India aims for energy independence by 2047 and net-zero emissions by 2070. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with USD 2.4 billion, targets 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production by 2030, with aims to reduce 50 million metric tonnes of CO2 annually and create over 600,000 jobs. India is progressing in green hydrogen development with 19 companies allocated production capacity and pilot projects in sectors like steel and mobility. Despite challenges like high costs and infrastructure limitations, India is positioning itself as a global exporter of green hydrogen by 2030. Collaboration opportunities were extended at the summit to engage Indian industries and boost the hydrogen economy.
