Premier Alan Winde led a delegation from the Western Cape Government at the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit 2025 in Cape Town, focusing on 'Unlocking Africa’s Green Hydrogen Potential for Sustainable Growth.' The summit gathered stakeholders including government officials, policymakers, and investors to drive South Africa and Africa's green hydrogen ambitions. The Western Cape Government, through its Energy Resilience Programme and Green Hydrogen Strategy, is committed to exploring sustainable energy solutions to enhance energy security, economic growth, and job creation. Premier Winde highlighted the urgency of addressing the climate change crisis and emphasized the need for sustainable energy solutions like green hydrogen. The province's Green Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, approved in 2024, aims to achieve economic growth, job creation, and energy security through increased renewable energy production. This strategy aligns with the goal of developing 15GW of green energy generation and up to 420,000 tonnes of hydrogen exports by 2035, fostering industrial development, skills creation, and regional integration. Dr Ivan Meyer, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development, and Tourism, emphasized the province's favorable position to lead in green hydrogen due to abundant solar and wind resources, robust infrastructure, and a supportive regulatory environment. Green hydrogen is seen not just as an energy solution but as a driver for economic growth, job creation, and skills development. The Western Cape aims to leverage green hydrogen to reach R1 trillion in economic growth and create 2 million jobs by 2035, aligning with its Growth for Jobs economic strategy.
