European Hydrogen Bank Boost: Winners Announced for €1 Billion Funding, Including Maritime Projects
Key Ideas
  • The European Commission awarded €1 billion in funding to 15 renewable hydrogen projects, aiming to produce 2.2 million tonnes of hydrogen and reduce over 15 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
  • Three maritime projects in Norway secured €96.7 million to develop hydrogen production, marking a focus on cleaner fuels for bunkering activities.
  • Additional national funding from Spain, Lithuania, and Austria will support projects in their countries, complementing the EU's efforts in hydrogen production and emissions reduction.
  • The upcoming third European Hydrogen Bank auction, with a budget of €1 billion, demonstrates the EU's commitment to further advancing hydrogen technologies and fostering market connections through the Hydrogen Mechanism.
The European Commission has announced the winners of the second European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) auction, where 15 renewable hydrogen production projects across the European Economic Area (EEA) will receive a total of €992 million in funding. These projects, located in five countries, are expected to produce nearly 2.2 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen over ten years, contributing to emissions reduction in sectors like transportation, the chemical industry, methanol, and ammonia production. The subsidy aims to bridge the cost gap for the winning projects and accelerate the adoption of cleaner fuels. Notably, three maritime projects in Norway secured €96.7 million to develop hydrogen production for bunkering activities. Apart from the EU funding, Spain, Lithuania, and Austria are providing up to €836 million in national funding for projects within their territories, further propelling the shift towards cleaner energy sources. The upcoming third European Hydrogen Bank auction, scheduled for the end of 2025 with a budget of €1 billion, will continue to promote hydrogen technologies. Additionally, the Hydrogen Mechanism will facilitate market connections and partnerships within the hydrogen sector, reinforcing the EU's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and emissions reduction.
