Trade, Industry, and Competition Minister Parks Tau spoke at the Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, emphasizing the advancements in South Africa's Green Hydrogen Commercialisation Strategy. The country is currently developing commercial-scale green hydrogen projects across different regions to unlock the value chain. The Industrial Development Corporation secured €23 million in grant funding from the German government to support key green hydrogen projects and accelerate their development. The government has identified 24 Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs), with some already completing pre-feasibility studies. Additionally, the Just Energy Transition Green Hydrogen Programme Management Office has been set up to oversee the implementation of the green hydrogen chapter of the JET-IP Implementation Plan. Minister Tau stressed the necessity of collaboration due to the immense funding required for the green hydrogen ecosystem. Various mechanisms will be explored to support investments and facilitate ecosystem development. He believes that the Green Hydrogen ecosystem will not only prevent further de-industrialisation but also drive the reindustrialization of South Africa's economy, highlighting the potential for economic growth and sustainability.
