Kentec Electronics has introduced the K-Detect-iON, a new flammable gas detector designed specifically for early hydrogen detection in Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) fire protection. The detector, which operates without calibration for at least a decade, is integrated with Kentec's Sigma ZXT extinguishing panels, enabling real-time monitoring of hydrogen gas levels in remote storage environments. This advanced monitoring aims to detect hydrogen gas at the initial stages of battery malfunction, triggering ventilation and suppression systems to mitigate fire risks. Kentec emphasized that the typical progression of BESS fire events, from cell failure to gas release and ignition, underscores the importance of early-stage monitoring. The K-Detect-iON is engineered to function consistently across EN and UL regulatory environments, enhancing its usability in international installations without modifications. With a wide operating temperature range and the capability to cover the 0–100% Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) range for hydrogen gas, the detector can identify hydrogen release early to prevent critical levels from being reached. Its quick response to gas presence minimizes false alarms and allows for prompt action before any ignition risk escalates. When paired with the Sigma ZXT panel, the K-Detect-iON can activate extraction vents and even trigger fire suppression sequences automatically, streamlining the gas detection and response process within a single platform. To further provide flexibility, the detector offers three programmable relay outputs, supports single and multi-sensor configurations, and features Modbus RTU communication via RS485. Kentec's innovative gas detector represents a significant step towards enhancing BESS fire safety by combining advanced detection capabilities with automation and technical adaptability.
