He particularly stressed the significance of nuclear energy, including the development of advanced reactors, fuel reprocessing, and building a domestic uranium enrichment capability. The urgency for commercially available high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) was flagged, as its supply is crucial for advanced nuclear technology. The DOE aims to deploy allocated funding to support HALEU development and enhance the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain. Moreover, efforts to address spent nuclear fuel through reprocessing were discussed as a valuable resource for next-gen reactors. Secretary Wright also expressed support for consent-based siting for long-term SNF storage and emphasized the goal of attracting private capital to the nuclear sector for small modular reactor deployment. Despite proposed budget reductions, the administration remains committed to commercial nuclear deployment and aims to bring in significant private capital to achieve this goal.
