HDF Energy Signs MoU with EVNSPC to Develop Green Hydrogen Power Plants in Vietnam
Key Ideas
  • Strategic MoU signed between HDF Energy and EVNSPC to develop five green hydrogen-based power plants in southern Vietnam, representing a €500 million investment.
  • Focus on providing cleaner and more reliable energy solutions to off-grid and island communities currently relying on diesel generators through renewable energy and hydrogen storage.
  • HDF Energy's Renewstable® technology integrates renewable sources with green hydrogen and fuel cells to offer 24/7 baseload power to remote areas, supported by the French government's IPCEI program.
  • The collaboration reflects the growing momentum for hydrogen energy in Southeast Asia and strengthens the France-Vietnam relationship in pursuing sustainable energy solutions.
French hydrogen energy developer HDF Energy, also known as Hydrogène de France, has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Vietnam’s Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) to establish five green hydrogen-based power plants in southern Vietnam. This partnership, formalized during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Vietnam at the French Embassy in Hanoi, signifies a significant €500 million investment. The focus of the MoU is to develop Renewstable® power plants that will replace diesel generators in off-grid and island communities across the South China Sea, providing a cleaner and more reliable alternative through renewable energy and on-site hydrogen storage. HDF Energy's Renewstable® technology is designed to combine intermittent renewable sources with large-scale energy storage using green hydrogen and high-power fuel cells. By ensuring 24/7 baseload power to remote areas not connected to the national grid, this initiative aims to enhance energy stability and sustainability. The fuel cells for this project will be manufactured in France, supported by the French government's Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) program. The MoU signing ceremony was attended by notable figures from both HDF Energy and EVNSPC, as well as government and industry officials, reinforcing the commitment to this collaborative effort. Damien Havard, CEO of HDF Energy, emphasized the significance of this agreement in advancing the deployment strategy in Vietnam, offering tailored solutions for the country's energy transition challenges. The positive sentiment was echoed by EVNSPC CEO Nguyen Phuoc Duc, highlighting the project's potential to accelerate the energy transition in Vietnam and ensure stable electricity supply at a lower cost than diesel-based power. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the broader trend of increasing interest in hydrogen energy in Southeast Asia, underscoring the commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The collaboration not only showcases technological innovation but also strengthens the bilateral relationship between France and Vietnam in the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable energy landscape.
