The European Commission is set to launch the "EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform" on 2 July 2025 to provide a streamlined approach for EU companies to source strategic energy commodities and raw materials. This initiative is part of the EU's efforts to leverage the single market's scale to enhance supply security, competitiveness, and advance the green transition. The platform will incorporate procurement mechanisms for hydrogen, biomethane, LNG, natural gas, and critical raw materials, aiming to simplify and accelerate access to these essential resources through demand aggregation and coordinated purchasing. It will kick off with the hydrogen track, facilitating connections between buyers and sellers of hydrogen-related products and supporting infrastructure planning for decarbonisation projects. The platform's development is led by a consortium including PwC and Sféra, focusing on creating dedicated streams for different resources. The launch aligns with the EU's broader strategy to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and secure materials crucial for green industrial goals. The platform's introduction is timely, addressing geopolitical and market challenges like export controls on critical minerals and global competition for energy resources. Companies involved in energy procurement, industrial decarbonisation, or raw materials supply are encouraged to participate in the upcoming rounds to benefit from this coordinated and transparent procurement process.
