Avia Solutions Group has announced the development of a cutting-edge sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility, NorSAF, in Liepāja, Latvia. The joint venture aims to address the increasing demand for low-emission aviation solutions by producing up to 100,000 tonnes of SAF annually starting in 2030. With an estimated investment of €500-600 million, the project will seek financial support from various sources, including EU funds and institutional investors. The facility will play a crucial role in meeting EU regulations, which mandate a progressive increase in the usage of SAF in aviation fuel, reaching 70% by 2050. The PureSAF technology to be employed at the plant offers significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions and enables the production of both bio-based and synthetic SAF. By integrating bioethanol, green hydrogen, and captured CO2, the NorSAF plant will meet the evolving EU requirements for sustainable aviation fuel. The strategic advantages of the chosen site in Liepāja, including existing infrastructure and plans for green energy production, highlight Latvia's position as a key player in the green aviation network. The facility's integrated production model ensures sustainability and scalability, contributing to both energy independence and green growth in the region. With project timelines on track, the NorSAF plant is set to revolutionize the SAF industry in Northern Europe, meeting local demand and fostering export opportunities for surplus SAF.
