Flemish public transport operator De Lijn has taken a substantial step towards its goal of operating a fully emission-free fleet by 2035 by awarding contracts for 290 electric buses to manufacturers BYD, Iveco Bus, and VDL Bus & Coach. The €185 million investment, funded by the Flemish government, marks a significant milestone in De Lijn's fleet electrification strategy. The first batch of these electric buses is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026, adding to the 230 electric buses currently being delivered. In a strategic move, De Lijn has opted for a full battery-electric vehicle strategy, withdrawing its hydrogen buses. This decision underscores the operator's commitment to electrification and sustainability. The procurement of 290 electric buses is part of a broader initiative, with the Flemish government allocating €400 million for the renewal of De Lijn's rolling stock. De Lijn's procurement strategy involves diversifying its suppliers, with BYD, Iveco Bus, and VDL Bus & Coach each playing a role in supplying standard and articulated electric buses. The order includes a significant share of buses from Chinese manufacturer BYD, with the majority being standard 12-metre buses. Additionally, De Lijn plans to continue its fleet electrification efforts by ordering another 500 electric buses in 2025.
