- Belgium tech company CMB.TECH Enterprises plans to invest in green hydrogen and green ammonia production for sustainable shipping fuel.
- The company faces challenges as most hydrogen and ammonia are currently produced through processes emitting CO2, highlighting the importance of green alternatives.
- Namibia's geographical advantages make it an attractive location for green hydrogen and green ammonia production, with potential benefits for the continent's economic growth.
The National Planning Commission (NPC) director general of Namibia, Kaire Mbuende, emphasized the government's commitment to maximizing energy sources to enhance the standard of living for Namibians. This includes a focus on green energy solutions like solar, hydro, green hydrogen, and green ammonia. During a visit by Belgium tech company CMB.TECH Enterprises to the State House, it was revealed that the company plans to invest in producing green hydrogen and green ammonia for sustainable shipping fuel. CMB.TECH CEO, Alexander Saverys, highlighted the necessity of transitioning from diesel to green alternatives like hydrogen and ammonia for ships. However, he mentioned the challenges of current production methods, which heavily rely on processes emitting carbon dioxide. Saverys pointed out that the sustainability of green hydrogen and green ammonia produced from sea water makes it a favorable option. Namibia's strategic location near the sea and stability in Africa make it an ideal choice for the company's production capacity, allowing easier access to trade routes and commodities. This move not only benefits Namibia but also holds potential for contributing to Africa's economic development and stability.
