Coal India to Supply Carbon-Free Energy for Green Ammonia Production
Key Ideas
  • Coal India plans to supply 4500 MW of carbon-free energy through solar and wind to AM Green for green ammonia production.
  • A memorandum of understanding was signed between Coal India and AM Green for long-term supply and sourcing of renewable energy.
  • AM Green aims to produce 5 million tonnes of green ammonia by 2030, contributing to India's green hydrogen production target under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
  • The partnership between Coal India and AM Green is focused on creating one of the world's largest carbon-free, renewable energy supply contracts for green molecules production.
Coal India (CIL) has announced plans to supply 4500 MW of carbon-free energy to the upcoming green ammonia facilities of AM Green in India. This supply will be achieved through a combination of solar and wind energy installations that CIL intends to establish across the country. A memorandum of understanding for long-term supply and sourcing of renewable energy was recently signed between the two entities. The solar power capacity is set to range from 2500 MW to 3000 MW, while the wind capacity is expected to be between 1500 MW and 2000 MW, with an estimated total investment of around Rs 25,000 crore. AM Green, with the aim of producing 5 million tonnes of green ammonia annually by 2030, will integrate the renewable energy sources provided by CIL with pumped hydro storage to ensure a consistent supply of green energy. This initiative aligns with CIL's proactive approach towards building a greener and more sustainable future, alongside its commitment to becoming India's integrated energy provider. The partnership also supports India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, with AM Green's production target contributing significantly. Anil Chalamalasetty, the founder of Greenko Group and AM Green, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the ambition to be a leading producer of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and other sustainable molecules globally.
