Jindal Steel Duqm, a subsidiary of the Naveen Jindal Group, is embarking on a groundbreaking venture to establish a 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) hydrogen-enabled green steel complex in Duqm, Oman, by 2028. This innovative project, valued at $3 billion, signifies a significant investment in sustainable steel production. The complex, developed in two phases, is designed to be at the forefront of hydrogen technology in the steel industry, with plans to transition from natural gas to green hydrogen once the supply chains mature. The facility will feature two Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) modules, with both units engineered to incorporate hydrogen from their inception. By 2033, Jindal Steel Duqm aims to introduce hydrogen injection into the DRI process, gradually replacing natural gas. This transition will be supported by green hydrogen supplied from renewable energy projects in Duqm, fostering a domestic and sustainable source for the steel plant. The initiative aligns with the global shift towards low-emission raw materials, with a focus on producing Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) and DRI with minimal carbon footprint to meet the demand for eco-friendly steel. Through the integration of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) technology alongside the DRI route, the complex promises a more adaptable and environmentally friendly steel manufacturing process. The collaboration between Naveen Jindal Group and the Government of Oman underscores a commitment to enhancing sustainable practices in the steel industry, with an eye towards a cleaner and greener future.
