Reliance Industries' Green Energy Ambitions in Jamnagar
Key Ideas
  • Reliance Industries Ltd aims to build giga factories for solar PV modules, batteries, and green hydrogen in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
  • Chairman Mukesh Ambani plans to transition from grey to green hydrogen and invest heavily in the new energy manufacturing ecosystem.
  • The company targets generating 100 GW of solar power by 2030 and achieving net carbon zero status by 2035 through a series of giga factories.
  • RIL has allocated ₹75,000 crore for the construction of five giga factories and aims to reduce the cost of green hydrogen to $1 per kilogram within a decade.
Reliance Industries Ltd, India's leading company, is in the process of building its first giga factory for photovoltaic (PV) modules in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The company, transitioning towards carbon-neutral energy production, has also initiated trial runs at its green energy complex. RIL plans to commission several projects this year, including a battery factory and a green hydrogen plant. Moreover, a 10 GW solar PV factory and a 5 GWh annual cell-to-pack manufacturing facility are in the pipeline. The company aims to shift to green hydrogen production and has earmarked ₹75,000 crore for five giga factories. Chairman Mukesh Ambani envisions doubling the investment to upscale the new energy manufacturing ecosystem. Ambani aims to establish 100 GW of solar power generation by 2030 and achieve net carbon zero status by 2035. To meet these objectives, RIL has planned five giga factories focusing on solar modules, battery storage, electrolyzers, fuel cells, and power electronics. Partnerships have been forged for setting up these facilities, with development underway at the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex in Jamnagar. The site, near existing refineries and a petrochemical complex, will be crucial for RIL's green energy ambitions.
