Solvay and Enagás have entered into a partnership to establish a hydrogen storage hub in Polanco, Cantabria. This collaboration combines Solvay's expertise in developing salt caverns infrastructure, originally utilized for soda ash production and repurposed for storage, with Enagás' proficiency in energy transport and hydrogen infrastructure. The initiative aligns with Spain's aspirations to emerge as a significant producer and exporter of renewable hydrogen. The salt caverns in Cantabria will offer a secure, adaptable, and expandable solution for storing renewable hydrogen, contributing to network stability and mitigating renewable electricity intermittency. Etienne Galan, President of Solvay’s Soda Ash and Derivatives business, expressed gratitude for partnering with Enagás, underscoring the strategic role of the European chemical industry in facilitating clean energy solutions. Enagás CEO, Arturo Gonzalo, emphasized the significance of the agreement in advancing Spain's hydrogen infrastructure, promoting decarbonization goals at both national and European levels, and enhancing competitiveness. The project, developed in collaboration with local stakeholders, further solidifies Solvay's position as a leading provider of salt cavern infrastructure in Europe. With a strong legacy of over 100 caverns in Germany, this endeavor marks Solvay's expansion into Spain's hydrogen storage sector, underlining its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
