India's AM Green Collaborates with Coal India for Massive Renewable Energy Project
Key Ideas
  • AM Green and Coal India Limited signed an MOU for a long-term supply of 4.5 GW of renewable energy, focusing on solar and wind power.
  • The collaboration aims to produce 5 million tonnes/year of green ammonia by 2030, a significant fraction of India's green hydrogen production target.
  • Indian government officials are optimistic about the role of green hydrogen in India's sustainable future, with plans to reduce production costs and promote international attractiveness.
  • The initiative includes the use of pumped hydro storage to ensure a steady supply of green energy for electrolyser operations in AM Green's projects.
AM Green, a green hydrogen and derivatives producer in India, is partnering with Coal India Limited to work on a significant renewable energy project. The collaboration involves a power purchase agreement targeting the supply and procurement of 4.5 gigawatts of renewable energy, primarily from solar and wind sources. The envisioned plan includes the construction of wind farms in southern states and solar plants in Gujarat and Rajasthan, with an estimated investment of around INR 250 million. This renewable energy will power electrolysers to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia across AM Green's projects, with a focus on using pumped hydro storage for energy stability. By 2030, AM Green aims to produce 5 million tonnes/year of green ammonia, which aligns with India's green hydrogen production goals. Coal India's chairman highlighted the company's commitment to a greener future despite its reliance on coal in the present. The Indian government is enthusiastic about leveraging green hydrogen to achieve its sustainable development vision by 2047 and has launched a green hydrogen certification scheme to enhance international appeal.
