Green Hydrogen Revolution in Ladakh: NTPC's Innovative Initiative
Key Ideas
  • NTPC handed over five hydrogen fuel cell buses to SIDCO for commercial operations in Ladakh.
  • The hydrogen fuelling and green mobility stations in Leh are powered by renewable energy sources.
  • The project is expected to reduce the region's carbon footprint by 350 metric tonnes annually and contribute 230 metric tonnes of oxygen to the atmosphere.
  • The successful operation of hydrogen buses in Ladakh showcases India's commitment to clean energy innovation.
State-owned power company NTPC has delivered five hydrogen fuel cell buses to the Sindhu Infrastructure Development Corporation (SIDCO) for commercial operations in Ladakh. This move follows NTPC's establishment of the world's first hydrogen fuelling station and green hydrogen mobility station in Leh in November of the previous year. Situated at an altitude of 11,562 feet, the fuelling station is entirely powered by renewable energy and is combined with a 1.7 MW solar plant. The project is anticipated to have a significant positive impact on the region, with an estimated reduction of 350 metric tonnes of carbon emissions annually and a contribution of 230 metric tonnes of oxygen to the atmosphere each year — equivalent to planting 13,000 trees. NTPC, a key player in India's power sector, is pivotal in meeting the country's energy needs, supplying a quarter of the nation's power requirements. The successful deployment of hydrogen buses in Ladakh's challenging terrain underscores India's strides in advancing clean energy solutions.
