Ballard Power Systems has made a significant stride in Spain with the launch of the country's first fully off-grid, ultra-fast EV charging station in Zaragoza. The station, part of the ECOASIS project, is a game changer in zero-emission technology. It operates independently from the local electric grid, utilizing a mix of clean tech including Ballard's FCmove®-HD+ hydrogen fuel cell, solar PV, hydrogen storage, and batteries. The collaboration between Ballard Power Systems, Zoilo Rios Group, Circutor, and the CIRCE Technology Center, supported by funding from the NextGeneration EU recovery initiative, has led to the station's successful launch on June 17, 2025, at the El Cisne service station. Equipped with two 150kW fast chargers, ECOASIS is well-prepared for modern EVs and plays a vital role in meeting EU decarbonization goals. This off-grid station not only offers fast and clean charging but also opens doors for sustainable energy solutions in rural or under-connected regions. By showcasing how hydrogen infrastructure can complement renewables for cleaner transport, ECOASIS sets a new standard for next-generation charging stations, potentially influencing the future of eco-friendly transportation globally.
