The Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority, known as The COMET, has launched new zero-emission buses in the Midlands region to enhance sustainable transit. With the support of a $2.9 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration, the project features two battery-electric and two hydrogen fuel cell buses. These buses are currently in pilot service and are expected to be fully integrated into daily routes by May 2025. The initiative is seen as a significant step towards cleaner air and more innovative transit solutions. The investment also includes the necessary infrastructure for charging and fueling, reflecting The COMET's commitment to modernizing public transportation while reducing emissions and enhancing service quality. The features of the new buses include impressive ranges and capabilities, such as fast-charging for the battery-electric buses and quick refueling for the hydrogen fuel cell buses. The implementation of these eco-friendly buses is estimated to eliminate a substantial amount of greenhouse gas emissions annually when compared to traditional diesel buses.
